Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has recently unveiled a comprehensive five-point agenda aimed at advancing the development of the state following his inauguration as the 5th civilian governor. This strategic plan reflects his commitment to addressing key areas that are vital for the progress and well-being of the citizens.
In his inaugural speech delivered on Tuesday, Okpebholo emphasized the importance of prioritizing security, infrastructure, healthcare, food sufficiency, and education. These focus areas are designed to create a more stable and prosperous environment for the people of Edo State.
One of the governor’s most significant declarations was a firm stance against crime. He proclaimed a war on criminals, signaling an end to the persistent issues of kidnapping and other violent crimes that have plagued the state. This commitment aims to restore peace and safety for all residents.
While acknowledging the ongoing challenges posed by crime, Okpebholo assured the public that his administration would take a strong and decisive approach to enhance security measures. This includes implementing strategies to effectively combat criminal activities and improve the overall safety of the state.
In addition to security, the governor expressed his administration’s intent to support small businesses and market women through the provision of soft loans. This initiative is aimed at fostering economic growth and empowering local entrepreneurs, which is crucial for the state’s development.
Moreover, Okpebholo announced the establishment of a panel of inquiry to investigate the reasons behind the failure to inaugurate 14 House of Assembly members-elect in the state during the 2019 elections for the 7th assembly. This move underscores his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.

The governor also highlighted the importance of traditional institutions in preserving the rich cultural heritage of Edo State. He pledged to provide the necessary support to these institutions, recognizing their role as custodians of culture and tradition.
In a significant cultural gesture, Okpebholo affirmed his administration’s support for the federal government’s decision to uphold the Oba of Benin as the exclusive owner of the returned artefacts looted during the Benin Massacre of 1897. This acknowledgment aims to strengthen cultural identity and heritage in the state.
The previous administration, led by Godwin Obaseki, had faced tensions with the Oba of Benin regarding the returned artefacts. Okpebholo’s commitment to reconciliation in this matter reflects a desire to foster unity and collaboration between the government and traditional leadership.
Finally, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, congratulated Okpebholo on his election, describing it as a powerful endorsement of the people’s will. Shettima noted that the Edo people have demonstrated confidence in both Okpebholo and his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, marking this election as a pivotal moment for genuine governance in the state.
