OpenAI has stated that it won’t be releasing an AI model known as Orion this year, contradicting some recent reports about their upcoming products.
A spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email, “We don’t have plans to release a model called Orion this year. However, we do have exciting new technology coming out.”
The Verge had reported earlier that Orion, which is expected to be OpenAI’s next advanced model, would be available by December, with select partners getting early access before it rolls out on ChatGPT. They mentioned that Microsoft, which works closely with OpenAI and has invested in them, might see Orion as soon as November.

Previously, OpenAI had said that The Verge’s report was inaccurate but didn’t provide more details.
Orion is believed to be an upgrade from OpenAI’s current main model, GPT-4o, and it’s said to be trained partly using a new type of data from another model called o1, which focuses on reasoning. OpenAI plans to keep developing new “GPT” models along with reasoning models like o1, as they serve different purposes.
OpenAI’s statement leaves some uncertainty. It’s possible that their next big model is something other than Orion, or they might still launch a new model by December, but it could be less advanced than Orion.
For now, it’s hard to tell what will happen next.
