PDP Postpones NEC Meeting Due to State Congress Crisis

PDP Postpones NEC Meeting Due to State Congress Crisis

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee have expressed their discontent regarding the recent decision to postpone the party’s 99th National Executive Committee meeting to October 24. According to these party leaders, this delay from the previously scheduled date of September 26 appears to be a calculated effort to hinder the party’s discussions on important matters.

Initially set for August 15, the NEC meeting was meant to address significant issues, including the replacement of the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. However, it was first postponed to September 26 due to members traveling to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage. On September 13, it was reported that the meeting had been rescheduled once again to October 24.

The leadership of the party, in a document reviewed by our correspondent, indicated that the postponement was unavoidable due to unresolved congresses in eight states. Despite this explanation, the chieftains who spoke to our correspondent rejected the reasoning behind the NEC meeting’s delay.

In a document dated September 16, the PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, clarified that the NEC meeting was moved to October 24 to ensure that congress reports from the eight states were complete and could be presented as required. This move aims to provide a comprehensive overview during the meeting.

Furthermore, the PDP National Secretary announced that congresses would take place in Abia and Ebonyi on a date yet to be determined, while ongoing congresses are currently being conducted in Benue, Ekiti, Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, and Sokoto. This indicates a concerted effort to finalize the party’s internal processes.

The statement elaborated that, following the directive from the NEC to conduct congresses in 24 state chapters, the National Working Committee began this process but faced challenges in some states. These challenges included litigation, disagreements among stakeholders, and logistical issues.

In particular, the states where congresses remain incomplete due to legal disputes are Abia and Ebonyi, while those still in progress include Benue, Ekiti, Kano, and Kaduna. The ongoing complexities highlight the difficulties the party faces in maintaining cohesion and moving forward with its agenda.
