Protest: Obi’s lawyers write Onanuga demand N5bn, apology

The Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate for the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has given a 72-hour ultimatum to Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to the President. He demanded a public apology published in four national newspapers and payment of N5bn as damages for defamation and libel, or else face legal action.

Obi also demanded that Mr. Onanuga retract his accusation linking him to the planned mass protest scheduled for August. The Presidential Spokesperson had claimed on July 20, 2024, that Peter Obi’s supporters were planning mayhem in Nigeria and that Obi should be held responsible for anarchy.

In a letter written by his legal counsel, Chief Alex Ejesieme, SAN of the MADIBA Chambers, Obi expressed that the allegation tarnished his hard-earned reputation and caused emotional distress. The letter demanded a retraction of the statement and an unreserved apology within 72 hours.
