Nigerian artist Niniola stated that she declined offers from record labels because she is cautious about the business aspects of the music industry.
She mentioned that several labels have reached out to her, but she decided to stay independent.
The ‘Maradona’ singer shared this in a recent interview with TVC. She explained that being an independent artist allows her creative freedom.
“I have been an independent artist for 10 years. There are advantages and disadvantages to signing with a record label. I’ve witnessed the business side of the music industry that many overlook, as they focus solely on creating music.
“Being independent allows me to pursue my vision. I have control over my creativity. A label approached me after my debut single, but I was hesitant because I didn’t want anyone to change my style. At that time, no one was doing Afro-house. Labels can dictate your work since they are the ones funding you.
“For me, creative freedom is one of the biggest benefits of being an indie artist,” she stated. Niniola also revealed that she is an introvert, but music brings out her extroverted side.
