Rivers Political Crisis: Opposition Legislators Claim 27 Pro-Wike Assembly Members Have Been Disqualified!

The political landscape in Rivers State is heating up as a fierce battle unfolds over the rightful members of the House of Assembly. Opposition lawmakers are boldly standing their ground, asserting that 27 members—aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike—have lost their seats after defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of this riveting political saga.

Defections Spark Controversy: Who’s in and Who’s Out?

In a striking move, a coalition of opposition lawmakers has declared a bold assertion: former Speaker Martin Amaewhule and his 27 pro-Wike legislators are no longer legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Their reasoning? The law stipulates that switching parties in the absence of an internal crisis leads to the automatic forfeiture of a lawmaker’s seat.

They point to a few key facts that bolster their position:

  • The defection was made public right on the floor of the Assembly.
  • The lawmakers signed affidavits to affirm their departure from the PDP.
  • The APC welcomed them enthusiastically during a political rally, where a celebratory dinner was even held in their honor.

With these points at hand, the opposition demands that Amaewhule and his colleagues cease their claims of legislative authority.

Supreme Court: The Final Arbiter?

In a recent twist, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal from Governor Sim Fubara regarding the leadership of the Assembly. Yet, opposition lawmakers contend that this ruling does not equate to the reinstatement of the defected lawmakers.

But why was the appeal dropped? Governor Fubara cited the implementation of the 2024 budget, rendering the case moot. Still, the opposition maintains that the ruling doesn’t nullify existing laws, meaning the seats of the defectors should rightfully remain empty.

The Tug-of-War for Legislative Leadership

As the dust settles, opposition lawmakers are rallying behind Speaker Oko Jumbo as the rightful head of the Rivers Assembly. Meanwhile, the pro-Wike group is holding firm to their claims of legitimacy, creating a fog of uncertainty over the Assembly’s control.

What Lies Ahead?

With tensions escalating, several burning questions loom large:

  • Will the Supreme Court step in to deliver a definitive ruling on the fates of the defected lawmakers?
  • How will Governor Fubara navigate this complex political landscape?
  • Is further legal action or political unrest on the horizon?

One thing is abundantly clear: the political drama in Rivers State is far from over.
