Senator Sumaila praises Tinubu for sanctioning N95bn for irrigation initiatives in Kano

Senator Kawu Sumaila, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District, has expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for approving a substantial investment of N95 billion for dams and irrigation projects in Kano South and its neighboring regions. This commendation came during his remarks on a bill proposing the establishment of a university in Kura, Kano.

Mr. Sumaila emphasized that these projects are crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity within the state. He highlighted the long-standing neglect of irrigation communities and dams, which have not received significant intervention in the past three decades.

While addressing the parliament, he stated, “I have important information to share regarding the need for this type of institution in Kura or Kano State as a whole.” He further explained that Kura is part of the Kano Central district, represented by his colleague, Senator Rufai Hanga.

In contrast, Mr. Sumaila noted that he represents Kano South, where the dams that supply water to Kura and other irrigation areas are situated. He underscored the importance of these projects for the local agricultural landscape.

Citing historical context, he mentioned, “As my brother Senator Aliero pointed out, since the construction of the second largest dam in Challawa by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida between 1976 and 1990, there has been no significant work on the dams for over 30 years.”

Mr. Sumaila revealed that after submitting a request on behalf of the people of Kano South, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu graciously approved the rehabilitation and revitalization of the Kano irrigation scheme. This approval marks a significant turning point for the region.

He went on to detail the project locations, stating that work would commence at Karaye, Rogo, Challawa Gorge, Tiga, and Kafinciri dams. He praised the president for his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians through these initiatives.

“Mr. President, in his wisdom and love for Nigerians, has allocated N95 billion for us,” he affirmed. “For over 50 years, there has been little progress in that area, but now 90% of the process is completed.”

The senator also mentioned that contractors would soon mobilize to the site to reactivate the dams and irrigation areas. This development is anticipated to bring significant benefits to the local agricultural sector.

Finally, Mr. Sumaila highlighted that currently, there are about 9,000 hectares in the area that have remained undeveloped for over half a century. With the recent developments, he noted that they are looking at 6,000 hectares from President Bola Tinubu and an additional 3,000 from Karaye, Rogo, and Kura, where his colleague is advocating for the new university. “They are all direct beneficiaries,” he concluded.
