Seun Kuti stated, “I oppose colonialism, not European individuals.”

Popular Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has recently addressed misconceptions regarding his views on European colonialism, clarifying that his opposition is directed at the concept of colonialism itself, rather than the individuals from Europe. Known for his vocal stance against imperialism and corruption, Kuti emphasized the importance of distinguishing between the two in a recent post on his Instagram page.

In his message, Seun Kuti highlighted the pressing need for a more equitable and just world. He expressed that his critiques of European colonization should not be misinterpreted as animosity towards European people. Instead, he wants to foster understanding and solidarity in the fight against systemic injustices.

Kuti stated, “I’m against European colonization and imperialism, but that does not mean that I’m against European people. Many Europeans have been our allies in the fight against greed and unfair systems, striving to make the world a fairer place for everyone.” This sentiment underscores the idea that collaboration across cultures is essential in addressing global issues.

He further elaborated that being opposed to colonialism should not be seen as an attack on Europeans, as many have supported movements for justice and fairness alongside those who have been historically marginalized. “Being against colonization does not mean being against Europeans; many have stood with us in the fight for justice and fairness,” he asserted.

Kuti’s remarks serve as a reminder of the complexities surrounding discussions of colonialism and its lasting impacts. By advocating for a nuanced understanding of these issues, he encourages dialogue that focuses on justice, equality, and the shared responsibility of all individuals—regardless of their background—to work towards a more just society. His call for unity and cooperation is particularly relevant in today’s global landscape, where the legacy of colonialism continues to shape social, political, and economic dynamics.
