Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has announced a monthly maintenance allowance of N200,000 for secondary school principals throughout the state. This initiative aims to provide financial support for the upkeep of school facilities and address pressing maintenance issues.
The announcement was made during the Sokoto State 2025 citizens budget discussion held on a Monday. The meeting served as a platform for various stakeholders to discuss budgetary allocations and the needs of the state’s educational institutions.
The decision to allocate these funds came after a request from former deputy governor Chiso Abdullahi. He emphasized the importance of financial assistance for school principals to manage immediate repair needs effectively.
Abdullahi pointed out that these funds would be crucial for hiring services from skilled workers, such as carpenters and masons, who are essential for carrying out necessary repairs and maintenance tasks.
On behalf of the governor, Chief Press Secretary Abubakar Bawa confirmed the allocation, stating that each principal in the 23 local government areas will receive the monthly allowance. The disbursement of these funds is set to begin in January 2025.
Bawa further elaborated that this financial support aims to enhance the overall maintenance and functionality of secondary schools across Sokoto State. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure.
Additionally, Governor Aliyu issued a directive to the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Dadi Adare, to conduct an urgent review of the allowances provided to traditional rulers. This review is intended to ensure that their compensation aligns with current economic conditions.

The directive was prompted by a request from the District Head of Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, during the discussion. Kilgori advocated for an increase in traditional rulers’ allowances to better reflect the prevailing economic realities.
This comprehensive approach by Governor Aliyu not only addresses the immediate needs of school maintenance but also considers the welfare of traditional leaders in the state. It highlights the government’s proactive stance in responding to the needs of its citizens.
Through these measures, the Sokoto State government aims to foster a better educational environment while ensuring that traditional rulers are adequately supported in their roles.
