Controversial Nigerian artist Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, has finally been released from custody. Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju announced this on Tuesday, stating that Darlington, also called Akpi, has exited Kuje Prison. In a post on X, Adeyanju wrote: “Speed Darlington is out of Kuje Prison.”
Recently, an Abuja court granted him bail after the Nigeria Police Force responded to mounting pressure and brought him to court. Okoye had previously submitted a petition to DIG Dasuki Galadanchi, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police at the Force Intelligence Bureau in Abuja, regarding his ongoing detention. In his petition, he urged the DIG to adhere to a court order that challenged the legality of his prolonged detention.
The singer was arrested after accusing Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy of having an inappropriate relationship with U.S. rapper and music executive Sean Combs, known as P. Diddy. However, on December 23, 2024, Justice M.S. Liman issued an order directing the police to either charge Okoye in court within 48 hours or release him without conditions.
