Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, recently shared significant news regarding financial assistance for those affected by the recent flooding in Maiduguri. His announcement highlighted the state government’s commitment to supporting the victims during this challenging time.
As of last Sunday, the government has successfully secured nearly 4.5 billion naira. This funding is part of a broader initiative that exceeds a total commitment of 13 billion naira to aid flood victims throughout the region.
Governor Zulum emphasized the importance of informing the public about any additional financial contributions that may be secured. Transparency and communication are critical components of the government’s approach to disaster relief.
In his address, Zulum revealed the establishment of a 35-member committee tasked with overseeing the distribution of financial assistance. This committee is designed to ensure that aid reaches those most severely affected by the flooding.
The committee will include representatives from several essential government agencies. Notable among these are the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), which will help ensure accountability in the distribution of funds.

The Department of State Services (DSS) will also be represented on the committee. Their involvement is crucial for maintaining security and integrity throughout the aid distribution.
The committee will also feature advisors to the governor, representatives from the North East Development Commission (NEDC), and officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development. This diverse representation aims to enhance the committee’s effectiveness in addressing the needs of flood victims.
Moreover, the Ministry of Finance and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) will play significant roles in the committee’s operations. Their expertise will be vital in managing the financial aspects of the aid distribution.
Governor Zulum urged committee members to perform their duties with diligence and integrity. He underscored the critical need for the funds to be utilized appropriately and efficiently to ensure that support reaches those who need it most.
Lastly, Zulum highlighted plans for the government to repair essential infrastructure, including hospitals, roads, and bridges. He noted that many individuals, particularly those with resources, have provided financial aid and food supplies to assist the flood victims. Thus far, the total received assistance has amounted to approximately 4.4 billion naira.
