Tesla Recalls Over 27,000 Cybertrucks Due to Reverse Camera Delay

The decision follows alarming reports about visibility issues with the Cybertruck’s rearview camera. Drivers have been experiencing significant delays in the activation of the rearview display, raising serious safety concerns. According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the camera software in 2024 Cybertrucks produced between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024. The rearview camera can take six to eight seconds to activate after shifting into reverse, while NHTSA regulations require it to engage within two seconds—a substantial delay that poses potential safety risks.

Tesla explained that this delay occurs because the system requires time to boot up after being shut down. The company noted, “If the driver begins to back up before the vehicle’s system completes its shutdown and boot-up, the rearview image may not display within the required time.”

While Tesla has received 45 warranty claims and four field reports related to this issue, it assured the public that, as of September 25, 2024, it is “not aware of any collisions, fatalities, or injuries” tied to the recall. To fix the problem, Cybertruck owners have been provided with an over-the-air (OTA) software update to ensure the rearview camera meets the two-second activation requirement.

This incident marks Tesla’s fifth recall since the Cybertruck’s launch in late 2023. Earlier this year, a recall affecting 4,000 Cybertrucks was issued due to a defect in the accelerator pedal, which could become stuck because of a dislodged pad. Additional recalls in June addressed windshield wiper malfunctions and loose exterior trim, highlighting an ongoing pattern of safety concerns with the vehicle.
