The presidency has confirmed the death of General Tahoreed Lagbaja, who served as the Chief of Army Staff. This announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement released on Wednesday.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja at the age of 56. His death occurred on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness.
Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja had a remarkable military career. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu, marking a significant milestone in his service to the nation.
His journey in the military began in 1987 when he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course.

Throughout his career, Lt. General Lagbaja showcased exceptional leadership and dedication. He served as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, demonstrating his commitment to his duties.
He played crucial roles in various internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. His contributions were vital to maintaining security in these regions.
An alumnus of the esteemed U.S. Army War College, he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, reflecting his dedication to professional development and excellence in military leadership.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his loving wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the family and the Nigerian Armed Forces during this challenging time, honoring Lt. General Lagbaja’s significant contributions to the nation and wishing him eternal peace.
