A recent survey conducted by AAA reveals that a significant number of Americans are still hesitant about self-driving vehicles. According to the findings released today, 61 percent of respondents expressed distrust towards these autonomous cars. This survey, which included responses from 1,095 people, did not make a distinction between semi-autonomous vehicles, such as certain Tesla models, and fully autonomous ones like Waymo’s robotaxis. In contrast, only 13 percent of those surveyed indicated that they trust self-driving vehicles, while 26 percent remained uncertain about their safety.
Interestingly, while the percentage of people who are afraid of self-driving vehicles has decreased slightly from 66 percent last year, it still represents a 7 percent increase in fear compared to when AAA first began surveying this topic in 2021. This suggests that, despite some progress, many individuals continue to feel uneasy about the idea of riding in a car without a driver behind the wheel. The ongoing concerns reflect a broader apprehension about the safety and reliability of this emerging technology.
The survey also delved into public awareness of robotaxis, which are self-driving rideshare vehicles available in certain cities. It found that 74 percent of respondents were aware of these services. However, a surprising 53 percent stated that they would not be willing to ride in a robotaxi. This reluctance was particularly evident among Baby Boomers, although even Millennials and Generation X drivers, who were generally more open to the idea, expressed significant reservations about using these vehicles.
When it comes to priorities, the survey indicated that the development of self-driving vehicles is not at the forefront of public interest. Instead, most respondents expressed a preference for investments in vehicle safety systems rather than expanding access to autonomous vehicles. The survey results showed a decline in public interest in self-driving technology, dropping from 18 percent in 2022 to just 13 percent this year. This shift suggests that many people are more focused on improving existing safety features than embracing the future of self-driving cars.

Greg Brannon, the automotive engineering director at AAA, commented on the survey’s findings, emphasizing that most drivers want automakers to prioritize advanced safety technologies. He noted that while opinions on fully self-driving cars vary significantly, it is clear that today’s drivers place a high value on features that enhance their safety. This sentiment highlights the importance of addressing safety concerns as the industry moves forward with autonomous technologies.
Despite skepticism towards fully autonomous vehicles, many drivers expressed interest in specific self-driving features that could improve safety. Technologies such as automatic emergency braking, reverse automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assistance were particularly appealing to respondents. This indicates a desire for advancements that can assist drivers and enhance their overall driving experience, even if they are not ready to fully embrace self-driving cars just yet.
In light of these findings, AAA has reiterated its call for clearer naming conventions for autonomous technologies. As the public grapples with the complexities of self-driving systems, reducing confusion around terminology could help foster a better understanding and acceptance of these innovations. Clear communication about the capabilities and limitations of self-driving technology may play a crucial role in easing public fears and building trust in the future of transportation.
