Threads Users Can Now Follow Profiles From Other Federated Servers

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has recently made an exciting update to its app called Instagram Threads. This update helps users connect more easily with a broader network of online platforms known as the “fediverse.” The fediverse is a collection of different social media services that are interconnected, allowing users to interact across various platforms. Some popular services within the fediverse include Flipboard, Mastodon, Pixelfed, and PeerTube.

On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, shared that users of Threads can now follow profiles from these other fediverse platforms. This means that if you use Threads and have opted to share your content with the fediverse, you can now follow people from other platforms who have engaged with you on Threads. For example, if someone from another fediverse platform has liked, followed, or replied to a post on Threads, you can now follow them back, even if they are not using Threads directly.

Additionally, when you’re browsing through Threads, you can visit someone’s profile and see all of their posts from other platforms within the fediverse. You will also get notifications on Threads whenever that person posts something on their own platform, keeping you updated on their activities.

This new feature is part of Meta’s larger goal to make Threads fully compatible with the fediverse, allowing for seamless interaction between different social media services. Back in October, Threads introduced a feature that lets users see who is following them and liking their posts from other fediverse platforms. Users can also view replies they have received from the fediverse.

Meta has been enabling users to connect their Threads accounts to the fediverse since March, and this latest update is a significant step in enhancing those connections.
