President Bola Tinubu has formally reached out to the National Assembly to request the confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the new Chief of Army Staff. This move follows the recent vacancy created by the death of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja on November 5.
In the letter dated Friday, Tinubu emphasized that this request aligns with the provisions outlined in Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, along with Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. These legal frameworks guide the appointment and confirmation processes for military leadership in Nigeria.
Previously, in October, Tinubu appointed Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff due to Lagbaja’s illness. This decision was made to ensure continuity in military leadership during a critical time for the armed forces.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed these developments in a statement released on Friday. He highlighted the importance of confirming Oluyede to secure effective leadership within the army.
In his letters to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Oluyede’s capabilities. He believes that Oluyede possesses the leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience necessary to guide the army effectively.
Oluyede’s military career has been distinguished; he is a member of the 39th Regular Course and previously served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, stationed in Jaji, Kaduna. His extensive experience equips him well for the role of Chief of Army Staff.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, Oluyede has demonstrated a commitment to his military duties since 1987. His rise through the ranks reflects his dedication and competence in various leadership positions within the army.
