Tyla has garnered several nominations, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, and Top Afrobeats Artist.
The star of “Water” leads the nominations for Top Afrobeats Song with her hit tracks from her debut album, “Tyla,” which was released on March 22, 2024. The nominated songs include “Water,” “Truth or Dare,” and “Jump.” Tems is also nominated for her song “Me & U,” alongside Adam Port & Stryv featuring Malachiii for their track “Move.”
This nomination comes after her victory in the Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 VMAs, held on September 11, 2024, at The USB Arena in New York. She won for her popular single “Water.”
Other nominees in this category include Ayra Starr’s “Last Heartbreak Song,” Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s “Ruin” featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ “Love Me Jeje.”
While accepting the Moonperson on stage, the South African artist emphasized the significance of her hit song. “The global impact of ‘Water’ demonstrates that African music can also be pop music,” she remarked.
“This moment is incredibly special, yet bittersweet because there’s a tendency to categorize all African artists under Afrobeats,” Tyla added. “While Afrobeats has made significant strides and opened many doors for us, African music is incredibly diverse. It encompasses much more than just Afrobeats.”
