South African artist Tyla has shattered Beyoncé’s record for the most streamed album by a Black female artist released in 2024. Tyla’s self-titled debut album achieved this milestone by reaching 1.565 billion streams on Spotify, surpassing Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ at 1.564 billion. This album is now the most streamed album of all time by a female African artist.
The lead single “Water” has nearly reached a billion streams on Spotify and won the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammy Awards. However, Tyla’s album and its deluxe version were overlooked in the nominations for the recently announced 67th Grammys. Despite this, she remains the most awarded African artist of the year, with a total of 20 accolades, including 1 Grammy, 3 MTV EMAs, 2 BET Awards, 1 MTV VMA, 1 Billboard Global Force Award, 4 South African Music Awards, 1 Cultural and Creative Industry Award, 1 DStv Content Creator Award, 1 3 Music Award, 1 Metro FM Music Award, 1 Africa Arts Entertainment Award, 2 Basadi in Music Awards, and 1 South African Style Award.
