Uber Is Creating A Team Of Gig Workers To Label Data For AI Models

Uber is making some big changes by bringing on more gig workers and trying something new: helping with AI tasks that involve annotating data and labeling information.

They’ve launched a new division called Scaled Solutions, where they are hiring independent contractors. These workers will be responsible for completing various projects not only for Uber’s own internal teams but also for other companies. Some of these companies include Aurora Innovation, which is focused on self-driving vehicles, and Niantic, known for developing popular video games like Pokémon GO.

Uber is looking for contractors in different countries, including the United States, Canada, and India, as part of this recruitment effort.

The reason Uber is stepping into the data labeling space is that there is a growing demand for these services due to the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Many companies are now seeking help to label and organize data for their AI systems to function better. One such company, Scale AI, has experienced a surge in demand and raised a significant amount of money recently—$1 billion—bringing its total worth to about $13.8 billion. This is a huge jump from the $600 million it had raised over eight years before this new funding round.
