UNITED STATES: 10 fatalities, 30 injured in terrorist attack on crowd

At least ten people have died and thirty others sustained injuries after a vehicle crashed into a crowd in a popular tourist area of New Orleans. City officials reported the tragic incident on Wednesday, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Witnesses told CBS News that a truck barreled into the crowd at high speed. After the vehicle struck the pedestrians, the driver exited and began firing a weapon, leading to a chaotic scene as police responded with gunfire.

The FBI confirmed late last night that this incident is being treated as an act of terrorism. This classification underscores the gravity of the event and the intent behind the driver’s actions.

NOLA Ready, the emergency preparedness program for New Orleans, released a statement detailing the ongoing situation. They noted that the 8th District is currently handling a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large gathering on Canal and Bourbon Street.

According to the statement, there are currently thirty injured individuals and ten fatalities. Emergency services are working diligently to manage the aftermath of this horrifying event.

Although emergency authorities did not specify the exact time of the incident, it occurred in an area known for its vibrant nightlife. The French Quarter is typically bustling with revelers, especially during the New Year celebrations.

The timing of the incident is particularly tragic, as many people were likely out celebrating the holiday. The festive atmosphere of the district was shattered by this violent act, leaving the community in shock.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the victims and their families. The city is grappling with the repercussions of this attack, which has marred what should have been a joyous occasion.
