Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed his condolences to the Sokoto State government and its residents following the deaths of approximately 10 civilians in an airstrike aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group in the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities within the Silame Local Government Area.
The tragic incident occurred on December 25, 2024, when the military targeted a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgents in the Silame region of Sokoto State, resulting in fatalities and injuries among the villagers.
Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, stated that the airstrike was conducted based on reliable intelligence from various sources and confirmatory aerial surveillance. He assured that the reports of civilian casualties would be thoroughly examined.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President conveyed his sympathy to the families of those who were mistakenly affected by the military operation against the terrorist group, acknowledging the unfortunate reality of innocent civilians being caught in the crossfire during the ongoing battle against terrorism in the country.
He remarked, “I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, especially to the families of those who lost their lives in the coordinated joint operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma aimed at eliminating the Lakurawa terrorist groups in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area.
“I must express our sorrow and dismay regarding the civilian casualties and the immense pain that arises during these challenging times. I urge for understanding, particularly considering that our brave Armed Forces are fighting and making the ultimate sacrifice to protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire.
“My thoughts and prayers are especially with the relatives of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. May the Almighty God alleviate your suffering and grant you the strength and patience to endure this loss.” Senator Shettima, representing the military, expressed regret over the occurrence and called for increased support for the troops, emphasizing that with valuable information, the officers could enhance their accuracy and precision in identifying terrorists among the innocent villagers they are committed to protecting.
He stated, “On behalf of our courageous officers, I apologize for this significant loss. I encourage you to continue providing our dedicated officers with the support they require to carry out their operations, ensuring a safer nation for all.
“Let me assure you that the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is determined to eliminate any remaining terror elements in the country and will not relent in its efforts to ensure a peaceful Nigeria where farmers can work freely and all citizens can conduct their daily activities without fear of attacks from those who bring death.”

Additionally, Vice President Shettima led a delegation from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on a condolence visit to the government and people of Jigawa State following the deaths of the mother and son of the state governor, Alhaji Umar Namadi. Within 24 hours of his mother’s passing, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, the governor also lost his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi.
Senator Shettima was joined on the visit to Hadejia, Jigawa State, by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State; Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; several members of the National Assembly from Jigawa State, and senior government officials. During the condolence visit, the Vice President remarked, “Death is an unavoidable fate that awaits us all.”
“We all belong to Allah, and we are at the train station with our baggage, waiting for the train. From where? From Allah, to where? To Allah. Our bags and baggage represent our deeds in this world,” he added.
