We Will Conduct Free & Credible LG Elections-Governor Yusuf

A recent statement from the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, highlighted significant developments regarding local governance in Kano State. During a stakeholders meeting held at Africa House, Government House, Kano, Governor Yusuf outlined his administration’s plans for upcoming local government elections. This meeting involved key leadership figures from the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and served as a platform for discussing vital governance issues.

Governor Yusuf emphasized the necessity of adhering to the rule of law, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s judgment that confirmed financial autonomy for local governments. He underscored that his administration is committed to conducting the council elections in strict compliance with this ruling. The governor’s focus on legal adherence reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that governance is not only effective but also transparent and accountable at all levels.

In his remarks, Governor Yusuf assured stakeholders that the upcoming local government elections would be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and credible. He extended an invitation to opposition parties, encouraging their participation in the electoral process. This openness signals a commitment to democratic principles and a belief that inclusive governance can strengthen the political landscape in Kano State. The governor reassured attendees that his administration would not interfere in the electoral process, fostering an environment of trust and fairness.

Moreover, Governor Yusuf noted the importance of allowing the previous Local Government Executive Councils across all 44 local government areas to complete their terms. This decision, made despite external pressures to dissolve these councils, demonstrates his administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law and maintaining stability within local governance structures. By respecting the terms of elected officials, the governor reinforces the principle that governance should be grounded in legal frameworks and democratic norms.

Looking ahead, the governor indicated that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) is actively preparing for the forthcoming council polls, which are expected to take place soon. He mentioned that the party would soon initiate a process to select candidates for the 44 local government areas, who will contest for positions such as Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councilors. Governor Yusuf expressed optimism about the electoral process, stating that campaigns would be conducted peacefully, with the expectation that a significant number of citizens in Kano would engage in the voting process, particularly in support of the NNPP.
