A Non-Governmental Organization, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), has urged Nigerians to be aware of their HIV status and to steer clear of risky behaviors. Dr. Eche Ijezie, the Country Programme Director of AHF Nigeria, made this appeal on Monday during the observance of World AIDS Day 2024, themed “Take The Right Path,” held in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
Ijezie emphasized the importance of sexual abstinence among young people and adolescents, stressing that if abstinence is not feasible, it is crucial to avoid unprotected sex and having multiple sexual partners.
“We must avoid risky behaviors such as engaging in unprotected sex and having multiple sexual partners,” he stated. “Everyone should know their status; testing is free, and condoms are readily available at no cost. We encourage everyone to get tested.”
He highlighted that the emphasis on avoiding risky behaviors is particularly important for adolescents and youth. Ijezie also mentioned the need for comprehensive sexuality education targeted at young individuals who may engage in risky activities, with the ultimate goal of preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
According to him, significant progress has been made over the years in the fight against HIV/AIDS, but more commitment is necessary to directly address the virus’s prevalence.
“Globally and in sub-Saharan Africa, statistics have improved due to the concerted efforts of various partners and governments at all levels,” he noted. “We are in a better position now than we were in 2023, with many individuals receiving life-saving medications.”
However, he stressed that the fight is far from over. “It is not the time to become complacent; we must continue to fight until the end. Young people are being educated to promote total abstinence,” he added.
