YouTube has just announced an exciting new update for its Shorts feature called Dream Screen, which now allows users to create video backgrounds using artificial intelligence (AI). Previously, Dream Screen could only generate static image backgrounds, but thanks to a new partnership with Google DeepMind, YouTube can now offer this enhanced capability. This new AI tool, called Veo, can produce high-quality 1080p video clips in a variety of cinematic styles.
Here’s how it works: You can now take a simple text prompt—like “candy landscape” or “magical forest with a stream”—and turn it into a dynamic video background for your Shorts. To use this feature, you first need to open the Shorts camera on the YouTube app. Then, tap the “green screen” icon and select the “Dream Screen” option. After that, you can type in your desired prompt and choose the animation style you like best. Once you hit “Create,” the Dream Screen tool will generate several video backgrounds for you to choose from.
After you pick a background you like, you can start recording your video with that background behind you. This means you can place yourself in the scene of your favorite book or create a fun animated introduction for your Short videos.
YouTube also has plans to expand this feature in the future, allowing creators to generate short, six-second video clips that can stand alone and be used in Shorts.

It’s important to note that this new feature is something TikTok, the leading platform for short videos, does not currently offer. While TikTok allows users to create AI-generated image backgrounds, it doesn’t yet have the capability to create video backgrounds like YouTube’s Dream Screen does.
As of now, this feature is available to users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, giving them a unique tool to enhance their creative videos.
