President Tinubu has dismissed the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Council and its officials

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made significant changes to the leadership of several universities in Nigeria. He approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University located in Awka, Anambra State. This decision comes amid concerns regarding the council’s recent actions, particularly its appointment of an unqualified Vice Chancellor without adhering to proper procedures.

The newly removed Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, and the registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, were part of the council led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe. The council also included five other members: Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.

The Federal Government intervened following reports that the council had acted unlawfully in its selection process. The appointment of the Vice Chancellor sparked tensions between the university’s Senate and the governing council, prompting the government to take action to restore order and compliance with university regulations.

Concerns were raised about the council’s apparent disregard for the governing laws of the university during the selection of the Vice Chancellor. This disregard for protocol has led to a broader discussion about the need for accountability and adherence to established procedures within university governance.

In addition to the changes at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, President Tinubu also addressed issues at the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State. Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami was removed from his position as Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the governing council due to his illegal actions, which included suspending the Vice Chancellor without following the correct procedures.

The Federal Ministry of Education had previously called for the revocation of Salami’s unlawful suspension of the Vice Chancellor. However, Salami chose to ignore these directives, displaying abusive and threatening behavior towards officials within the Ministry, including the Permanent Secretary.

These actions have prompted the Federal Government to reiterate the critical responsibilities of university councils. The primary role of these councils is to ensure the smooth functioning of university activities, adhering to the laws that govern each institution.

President Tinubu has emphasized the importance of maintaining order within universities and has warned councils against creating distractions that could hinder educational progress. His administration is focused on improving the standards of education across the country.

The recent decisions reflect a commitment to upholding the integrity of university governance in Nigeria. By addressing these issues, the government aims to restore confidence in the administration of higher education institutions.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, released a statement on November 20, 2024, confirming these developments and highlighting the government’s dedication to enhancing the educational landscape in Nigeria.
